ADVERTISING AS ART


Agency:TBWA/Santiago Mangada Puno Makati City, The Philippines

I cannot believe this picture is flying paint. It is so realistic. The vivid colors really pop and catch your attention. The ad is art. I do not think anyone would disagree with me. The ad was created for a brand of paint with environmental certification. This picture says just that to me. Paint is made to looks so complex and simple all at once. Art is at its' finest here and it is being shown to people for free.

I could not believe this ad was for Visine eye drops. It is a different creative for an eye drop ad. These little people are doing everything that makes a person laugh to collect real tears. The whimsical feel really throws the audience off at first, but I think that plays to the advantage. However, I think the true element that makes this ad art is the shock factor. It catches attention, but in a new innovative way. The soft lines and deep colors make the audience feel comfortable with the product. The ad is very inviting and easy going.

Who ever thought scissors could do this? Not me. This takes talent. The word art popped into my mind as soon as I saw it. It has so much talent, thought, and inspiration behind this simple cut out art, which are the reasons I think this ad is art. I thought scissors could just make paper snow flakes. These scissors are made to cut through metal and this ad demonstrates that idea very well. The graphic is bold and sticks out. I would make more of the focus on the scissors, so people do not just think oh this is cool and not even realize the main point. It is good advertising, but I wonder if the scissors really are as amazing as the art work makes them seem.

This print ad made a statement before I could even read the copy. That is why I think this ad is art. The message may be obvious and cliche, but it gets the point across the mass audience. Because the ad is for a museum, I understand why the ad is so simple. However, the simplicity is what makes this ad art along with the great photography. The monotones of brown and white make the ad bold. The white man holding the black woman's' identification card while the black man's hand is overcoming the sign of oppression. This ad made me think. I believe that is one factor in making advertising art: it has to make you think. The picture also makes me feel like advertising is helping a cause, and is just not pretty or to make people buy something. It is to make people be a part of our history.




Agency: GSD&M Idea City, Austin, Texas

This ad is for the new and improved BMW Z4 roadster. They used the car as a paintbrush on a huge canvas to create the picture on the top. They wanted to create art. The painting could be the the "artful" part of this campaign, but I disagree. I think the picture is rather boring and almost anyone can do it and if it was not for the fact the car made the painting, it would not be that interesting. It is an obvious art form and many would not look past the picture and just name it as why this ad contains art, but I disagree. The car with painted wheels is a better representation of art to me. It draws attention to the car and makes people realize this car is art, similar to the obvious painting. For the audience BMW wants to capture, showing the car as art is a very tactful way to make the car impressive. It also makes me think about how they made the car and how the assembly is also art. At first the ad caught my attention with the colorful painting, but I soon transferred all of my attention to the beautiful car.
